Art Gallery Stara Kapetanija
Riverfront gallery space showcasing contemporary art in the historic Zemun district.
Founded in 1985, the Art Gallery Stara Kapetanija (Old Captaincy) has emerged as a significant cultural institution situated between Zemun and New Belgrade. Over its nearly four-decade history, the gallery has hosted more than 800 exhibitions, showcasing diverse artistic expressions without favoring any particular style or genre. Stara Kapetanija gained media attention in recent years when a 2020 exhibition featuring work by caricaturist Marko Somborac, known for his criticism of authorities, was vandalized. The gallery has also hosted significant exhibitions like Predrag Milicevic-Barbarien’s debut show “Punch on the Middle Class” in January 1994, which was acclaimed as an exhibition of the month. Through its comprehensive programming and collaborative approach, Stara Kapetanija continues to promote artists of all generations from the region.
